The Mascot for the Maine VOAD's Education Division is a squirrel named Ready Freddy who has gathered disaster supplies in preparation for an emergency. This knowledge shared with children/students will help them and their families to be better prepared to handle disasters that may occur in their communities.
The purpose of the program is to teach and share with the public disaster preparedness. Our mascot, Ready Freddy a squirrel, will visit schools, hospitals, fairs and other organizations to share his knowledge and enthusiasm on preparedness. The program is unique in that it is centered on children with Freddy, a lovable mascot, teaching while sharing his coloring book and antics. The Maine VOAD is able to call upon it's members to follow up with any of the groups that show a greater interest in being prepared for a disaster, natural or manmade. The members that include the Red Cross, Salvation Army, Southern Baptist Relief and others all have training opportunities that would be shared. The project would continue by soliciting those groups who have experienced the Ready Freddy program to help spread the word on preparedness. The success so far has been judged by the letters from the children showing their knowledge of what they have learned. The program has continued to grow with more and more groups contacting us wanting our mascot to visit and teach. Ready Freddy started to walk and now has to run to share his knowledge. FREDDY Is READY are YOU?
